Interpreting temperature-strain data from mesoscale clathrate experiments

چکیده
Gas hydrates may play an important role in global climate change, carbon sequestration, energy production and seafloor stability. However, formation and dissociation pathways in geologically complex systems are poorly defined. We present a new approach to processing large amounts of data from a LUNA distributed sensing system (DSS) in the seafloor process simulator (SPS) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory to monitor and visualize gas hydrate formation and dissociation in heterogeneous sediments. The DSS measures relative temperature/strain change with a high spatial resolution allowing the heat of reaction during gas hydrate formation/dissociation to be used to locate clathrate processes in space and time within the vessel. Optical fibers are placed in the sediment following an Archimedean spiral design and the position of each sensor is determined iteratively over the arc length using Newton’s method. The DSS data are then gridded with a natural neighbor interpolation algorithm to allow contouring. The locations of sensors on the fiber were verified with hot and cold stimuli in known locations. Software was developed to produce temperature/strain linear and polar plots, which aid in locating significant hydrate formation/dissociation events. Results from an experiment using a vertically split column of sand and silt clearly showed initial hydrate formation in the sand, followed by slow encroachment into the silt. Similar systems and data processing techniques could be used for monitoring of hydrates in natural environments or in any situation where a hybrid temperature/strain

Phase changes of CO2 hydrate under high pressure and low temperature.
High pressure and low temperature experiments with CO(2) hydrate were performed using diamond anvil cells and a helium-refrigeration cryostat in the pressure and temperature range of 0.2-3.0 GPa and 280-80 K, respectively. In situ x-ray diffractometry revealed that the phase boundary between CO(2) hydrate and water+CO(2) extended below the 280 K reported previously, toward a higher pressure and...
متن کاملThermal conductivity of Xe clathrate hydrate at low temperatures
The effective thermal conductivity of the powder samples of xenon hydrate was measured in the interval 2–170 K using the steady-state method. The thermal conductivity of the homogeneous Xe clathrate hydrate was estimated from the effective thermal conductivity using an empirical expression. The applicability of the formula was checked by comparing two powder samples with different grain size an...
متن کاملThermodynamics of Clathrate Hydrate at Low and High Pressures
The thermodynamic stability of clathrate hydrate is calculated under a wide range of temperature and pressure conditions applicable to solar system problems, using a statistical mechanical theory developed by van der Waals and Platteeuw (1959) and existing experimental data on properties of clathrate hydrates and their components. At low pressure, dissociation pressures and partition functions ...
متن کاملLow Temperature X-ray Diffraction Studies of Natural Gas Hydrate Samples from the Gulf of Mexico
Clathrate hydrates of methane and other small alkanes occur widespread terrestrially in marine sediments of the continental margins and in permafrost sediments of the arctic. Quantitative study of natural clathrate hydrates is hampered by the difficulty in obtaining pristine samples, particularly from submarine environments. Bringing samples of clathrate hydrate from the seafloor at depths with...
متن کاملAmmonia clathrate hydrates as new solid phases for Titan, Enceladus, and other planetary systems.
There is interest in the role of ammonia on Saturn's moons Titan and Enceladus as the presence of water, methane, and ammonia under temperature and pressure conditions of the surface and interior make these moons rich environments for the study of phases formed by these materials. Ammonia is known to form solid hemi-, mono-, and dihydrate crystal phases under conditions consistent with the surf...
